The potential of financial instruments to support the integration of migrants in the EU is being explored in-depth in an EU-wide study, carried out by fi-compass as part of its AMIF activities delivered by European Commission’s Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs (DG HOME) in partnership with the European Investment Bank (EIB).
The work on the study was launched in October 2022 and is supported by experts from EY, the Microfinance Centre, t33 and Technopolis.
This fi-compass study looks into three key areas, identified in the fi-compass factsheet ‘Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund – Financial instruments’: microfinance, housing and social impact investing. These are areas in which financial instruments under the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) as well as other EU funds such as the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+), could play an important role in the 2021-2027 programming period.
The study aims to provide a market assessment for these three areas, analysing the financing needs, assessing the market failures and barriers affecting the demand to support, identifying the public and private support available and the capacity and readiness of stakeholders. In addition, potential design options for financial instruments in these areas will be described in the study.
Equipped with the results of the study, managing authorities and other stakeholder groups will be able to make an informed decision on next steps in advancing with their financial instruments supporting migrant integration.
